Re:surfing holland? - 2008/08/22 19:17 I often surf in holland, every second weekend (if there is any swell). The surf is quite different than at the atlantic. Don't know how to describe. I am happy when there are surfable conditions. But in other parts of the world these conditions would be describe as unsurfable.

You have different spots for different conditions. For you to find out.

Never ever had any problems with the locals. Same as everywhere. Respect. be friendly and so on.

greets

Re:surfing holland? - 2008/08/22 20:04 Surf in Holland is very inconsistent, it often comes together with strong wind, resulting in short, choppy clackers. Not easy to handle for beginners. Locals are friendly, but You have to understand that they might have waited 4 weeks ore more for waves, so they don't have fun with newcomers who aren't able to handle the special conditions. Be careful and stay a bit aside. Good place is Scheveningen with better overall conditions (access/parking/crowds) up north along the coast.

Re:surfing holland? - 2008/08/22 23:22 Have seen pix of surf up in the Friesian Islands. "Riddle of the Sands" sounds interisting, anyone ever surfed up there?

Re:surfing holland? - 2008/08/23 02:37 All outer Friesian Islands have surf, so there are a lot of local surfers. The best known island is Sylt, belonging to the "Northfriesian Islands" and Norderney belonging to the "Eastfriesian Islands". All of those are german, while the "Westfriesian Islands" are Netherlands territory.
All of those 15-20 islands provide much better windsurf and kite conditions so the waveriders are short-handed.
The spots are only reachable by ferry plus a long walk (almost no vehicules allowed). Nature protection and landscape conservation is very strict, so You find pure nature with a lot of fresh air.
Awaken interest to go? Just do it!

Re:surfing holland? - 2008/08/23 03:39 I surfed in Holland and it was exactly as Herwig described, made the most of it but conditions were well; poor.

Certainly, would not consider it a surf destination.

The Dutch are very cool people, no problems with "locals"!
