The Hole - The hole is a fantastic wave, but in recent years crowds have figured out about it, and it's a very dangerous wave if people are in the way... or if a crowd is pushing people deeper down the reef it get's very gnarly. Also it is inconsistent and if the wind isn't just right forget about it. But if you score it like I have years ago with nobody out and double overhead mindblowing pits... you'll be stoked as it's a very scary wave but offers up long psycho pretty pits.. just don't expect it. Mentawi is general has passed it's prime.

the south sucks - nah, don't even bother with the south part of the islands, the only reason to leave playgrounds is to go to HT's, don't even bother with maccas anymore, there's a surf camp now and when my boat was there all the guys in the surf camp just posted all day and we couldn't even get a wave. Then the captain took us south and the wind was all wrong and there weren't any spots for that direction wind. If we had been in playgrounds we could have just paddled over to another spot that was offshore and pumping. Lost a few days of my trip, i'll never get that back..

Place sucks - The problem with the hole is the inconsistency of the place. And when the swell is large enough to wrap around the island it's super crowded. With the reef being sooo shallow it can get outright dangerous with people int he water. My buddy hurt himself there and his whole trip was over. But if you do get a good one there you can sure get slotted nice, it's just out of the way and fickle so don't bother unless you are down in the south part of the islands anyway.

Don't Bother - Good Sumateran Sucks and the hole never even breaks except for like 5 times a year so don't bother asking your captain to go there because he probably won't know about it and then you'll get skunked and waste a few days of your surf trip. Think about it! That's like throwing hundreds of dollars down the drain. Don't do it.

Scored - Got the Hole with only our boat. Trading barrels all day. Five of the best barrels of my life withing a few hours. Hit this place, it's worth the travel.

Go now!!! - I went to the Mentawai's last June on Board a Good Sumateran Surf Charters boat and had the time of my life.

All I have been able to think about since then is getting back!
