Everyone to their own opinion - Both of these waves are incredible in there own right, each wave has its differences of course but in my own opinion dungeons scares the shit out of me just looking at it i mean this spot holds twice the size than the famous shark island, im sure on big swell a hold down would be twice as long and twice as powerful to. But don’t get me wrong as Shark island can be a very unforgiving wave but it wouldn’t be compared to say Mavericks or jaws where as dungeons could be due to its sheer size and power, but at the end of the day its just my opinion and if you surf either break i would take my hat of to you.

show respect for waves - I agree with the Duke, It don't matter which of these waves is more hardcore. You better show a great respect for either one or you're gonna wind up getting killed! Arguing about which wave has more "picturesque barrels" or which could be more "hardcore" is irrelevant because if you fail to show either wave the respect it deserves you'll be in shitload of trouble

- Hey, Shark island by unsigned...Don't you be an idiot. Just because someone has a different opinion than you about waves does not make them a fuckin idiot. Both are excellent and powerful waves that are world class. I agree they are hard to compare because they are so different, but they should both still be respected for what they are

Shark Island - Are you a fucking ideot 'Beautiful by SA in OZ'how can you say that Shark Island has nothing on this place if Shark Island held as much swell as this place it would be so much more hardcore

BEAUTIFUL - By the look of it this spot has everything. A thick ledgy section. Perfect picturesque barrels and then a huge towin section. Perhaps one of the best spots i have seen in the world. Absolutely beautiful and shark island has nothing on this!

i am not very good - hi guys i have started bodyboarding this year and i do not know how to duckdive. i can only turn and the biggest wave i would catch is about 5 foot if i was really charging or if it had perfect shape. could you please give me some instructions on how to duckdive? thanks.

yoyoyoyo - thats weird best photo number 5, the last one in the best foto section is hell weird its got a sick sucky barrel and then its crumbling in like the channel/shoulder! wtf u wuld come out of the barrel section and then get screwed!

Not so Big wave contest - Too bad they pulled the trigger when they did. After waiting months (it seemed) they run the contest in fifteen foot waves. Unfortunately, the waves three days later had 60 foot faces on them. Much more epic! Ask Greg Long, who rode one estimated at 70 feet. Take nothng away from the ZA chargers, they won the contest fairly, but the sponsors could have gotten much more for their money if their forecasters knew what they were doing and just waited a few days more. Hey, there's always next year!

Big Wave Contest - South African surfers have shown their mettle at the meanest surf spot on the African coast by taking the top three places at the Red Bull Big Wave Africa contest at Dungeons in Hout Bay.

The final on Thursday was held in monster waves that often made it difficult for the contestants to start.

John Whittle of Durban took first place - and a prize of R100 000. In second place was Andrew Marr of Cape Town, who was also awarded the Sensi Threads award for catching the biggest wave.

Third was Chris Bertish, formerly of Cape Town and now living in Britain.




Billabong Deep Throat
Another local, Jason Ribbink, won the Von Zipper prize for the best tube.

The only international visitor to win a prize was Jamie Sterling of the US who was awarded the Billabong Deep Throat prize for taking the biggest risk in the competition.

This included very late take-offs and the fact that he rushed all the way from Hawaii to arrive here only at 9am on the morning of the contest on Thursday, to overcome jet lag and go straight into the water.

"The day belongs to the South Africans," said an excited Whittle, after receiving his winnings.

"We have to thank the overseas guys for their participation. They taught us a lot over the years, they came here and showed us how to shape our boards for big wave surfing and they surfed with us. It is great for South African surfing. We are making our mark."

'The wind was good'
The contest is held only if swell conditions are big enough - between 4 and 5 metres high.

When asked about conditions, Whittle said it had been some of the best he'd experienced since he first took part in 1999.

"The wind was good, although it picked up during the final, but then the big waves also came through," he said.

Contest director Jonathan Paarman was in two minds.

"Look, it worked. We had a contest. It would have been nice to have more height on the swell, but you can't have everything always. The surfers wanted to go.

"It would have been wrong to cancel it. If we did, these guys would have gone out on their own.

"No, it was good. We had very good weather information and it showed us that today (yesterday) was going to be the best.

"The predictions were right, even with regard to the larger waves arriving at the time of the final."
