James is right - you're right James, i lied...there are no waves in the off-season. Despite this, we are running trips up until December for the 5th year in the row, i would offer you a spot on a trip so you could see about the waves for yourself but for some reason the trips are already fully booked up (WITH RETURN CUSTOMERS). I guess they just like sitting on a boat for 10 days while it's flat or something. James you're a kook, write me an email (it's still the same address) and we can meet up and have a nice chat about my greed next time you come through the area.

RE:Best deal ever - The comment below by eforaker@yahoo.com is typical of the greedy operators around here. Surfable swells are very rare in the offseason and favourable winds are non-existant. On top of that, wetseason weather is terrible.

golden geese - sick wave, up to 3 barrel sections if ya good enough, i ate some deer in the line up as i was hungry. this is quite acceptiable as deer is a delicous tasting animal that goes great with beetroot and a nifty shiraz. dont know what the wave way way around the point is called but surfed it and its fucken epic as well. once returning to padang becareful of geese, a wild goose once tried to swindle a pocket full of rupiah from my grasp. hectic

best deal ever - wanna surf thunders alone? i got the secret, off-season. Guess what, it's still surfable. want to check out some spots you haven't heard of? We can do that too. Get on the boat. This is no joke. Name your time, place and price.

this is pussy - the other day i surferd macas 138.6 ft of shore so fun. went right and droped in held the rail came out of the bazz did a backflip punt over a boat and cam back into the pocket another bazz and got it on film.
Por BUT FAR , 04-12-2005
Good - Always has a wave but not really worth going down this far, stay up towards the north where there are more choices. If you go just stay up in "playgrounds" where you can switch spots if the wind switches, and it often does. So don't waste your surfing time coming all the way down here, these trips are expensive, stay in the water and get your money's worth.

Heavy - Got rolled by a 10 foot set here surfing a BIG fresh swell at about 6 - 8 foot... like most indo breaks there are sneaker sets, this just happened to be 6 waves of about 10 foot!!! Had a long turbulent trip underwater to the inside... bring a big board, a strong leash & ya balls.......!Better waves in the area though....
Por no barrel , 09-11-2005
junk wave - thunders isn't so good, he's right, you're better off staying up around playgrounds, there are plenty of waves like this up there. Bankvaults is like this but with a barrel. Don't waste your time on your trip to come all the way down here! It's far and not worth it.

- NOT a five star wave and definitely NOT better than all the other waves that got four stars on this site. It's a pretty heavy left; so much so that all the waves after the first wave of the set have a weird funk on the drop due to the rebound of the energy from the first wave hitting the reef. Kind of like Gas Chambers in PR without the barrel. If you have a longer board it can be a good wave, but it has some power coming out of deep water and offers a shifty barrel on some sections. I found that my standard shortboard was great for all the Mentawai waves, except this one. Surfing Thunders on a 6'4" was kind of sketchy, especially getting to the bottom of the wave during the drop. Lots of water moving around. I got caught behind a section on one wave, jumped off my board and the force of the wave ripped my rashguard clear off my body and rag dolled me forever along the reef. I came up seeing stars and confused. I would rather have another day at Macca's or HT's with the crowds than an empty session at Thunders. Just my two cents... Captain told us that on really big days a new section opens up farther up the reef that offers a really heavy barrel. If you bring a 6'9" to the Mentawais this is the wave to use it on.
