It sucks for tourists - Sandies is full of groms who won't hesitate to drop in on travelling surfers. Also don't try to have them on about drop ins/snaking because theyll just get you even more. I spent about a month there during the summer and the waves were occasionally good but I never seemed to get any sets because of all the little s#!t$ stealing them.
If u want a few waves go somewhere like oceans where u will get way more swell, good banks and mellower locals.
Cheers

Go somewhere else! - Yeh, I agree. Travelling surfers should go up north to some other beach, nothing to see here folks , nothing to see here...

- Yep a fun wave but if you strike it right (not often) the biggest waves come from the SE and sitting on the hill watching them peel around the headland is a site to behold. Then sitting on the beach for 20 minutes plucking up courage to go out...those were the days....

talk it up - sandy bay is not what all the others are talking it up to be. it is like any other beach break has it´s days but because of headlands it missis out on a lot of swell. the right hand corner ¨kiddies corner¨ has a semi consistant bank because of the rocks. it is popular with the surfers from that area because it is the only consistent wave in that perticular area to get to another decent beach break that picks up any swell is an hour drive so all the surfers from town go here, so it´s packed, and it´s a small beach with an easy paddle out so thay love it. i will admit i have had some real fun surfs out here, but arriving at the beach at 5.30 in the morning, still dark on a weekday and having 5 cars also there is what will kill a good surf here. there is also a red alge that is like a soup at times that will cause some serious pain if it get´s in your eyes. have fun at the scunge

- Bro, I think your looking through rose tinted glasses.
When you look back on your youth it always seemes to be pumping.
I grew up surfing around this area too. And have just returned from three years travelling overseas. While I was away I was always thinking of my local break and remembering my awsome surfs. Came back chomping at the bit to surf Sandy's again and what happened? It was SHIT ALL SUMMER. Hardly any swell, and when it did come the banks groomed the waves into nice weak CLOSEOUTS! with that horrible red algae floating around getting in your eyes.
That's when I remembered there were a lot of crap days when I was growing up too. Six week flat spells and whole swells wasted cause there were no banks.

Why do you think there are more Sandy bay locals living on the Gold Coast than actually at Sandy Bay?

back in 82 - My friend and I were in NZ for 5 mo. Sandy bay was our main break. We came from Cal. Wooley bay, just to the south is where we lived. Wooley never broke except once, it was head high 50 ft. from dry sand in and out barrels for one hour. I love NZ and think about the place everyday. If you live there, your trully blessed. Oh yeah, Daisy bay is fun too. wananaki? sand bar left pt.unreal! Later.
