 Lord Howe Island

Australia, NSW

Lord Howe Island has been settled for 150 years but today remains largely unspoilt. About 75 per cent of the island and its islets are preserved as permanent park.

Situated in the South Pacific Ocean, 700 km north-east of Sydney, Australia, Lord Howe Island is a small, breathtakingly beautiful island, just 11 km long and 2.8 km at it's widest point. Included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1982, the island is bordered by a reef-fringed lagoon, rolling surf, and the world's southern most coral reef.

Lord Howe Island, with its rich green forests, tranquil beaches and incredibly blue seas, is dominated by the ruggedly spectacular volcanic peaks of Mt Gower and Mt Lidgbird. Tourist numbers are carefully controlled, the island is never crowded and there is minimal human impact on the environment.

This jewel of the Pacific teems with diverse sea life. Imagine at least 490 fish species and 94 coral species in crystal clear waters.

Climate:
The subtropical maritime climate produces mild-to-warm summers and cool-to-mild winters. Temperatures range from about 18°C to 26°C in summer and 13°C to 19°C in winter.

HEAVY - HEAVY WAVES ON THE WEST SIDE TAKE A GUN

Por knoB , 22-07-2008

- i agree with the frog. over rated and over priced for a surf destination. but a good place for kids and oldies.

What a hoax - I spent a few weeks there recently and found the waves inco and soft! I surfed most spots on the island and found all were sectioning over rated half reefs. Not worth the over inflated price to get there ( let alone accomadation costs!). The locals were mostly friendly although a little paranoid about protecting thier 'very' average waves?
