Almost local - I've surfed this place for the last 3 years on a range of tides, but I'm yet to see it gnarly. Gets pretty good but it's hardly a ball breaker. I surfed it today and it was actually fat!

Gnarly Gidley - There is a couple of breaks on Gidley ranging from the fast hollow and shallow main break to the sand bar of blackhawk bay.Main break or the apostle is absolutely ball tearing on it's day and I've surfed it holding double overhead. It has numerous sections, some are makeable some aren't as it peels down the reef. Most people choose to surf the end section to avoid any chance of contact with the razor sharp reef but push yourself up the line and go for speed, the rewards are much greater. We have been lucky enough to have a few pics in the past published in both "Tracks" and "ASL" but generally the location is guarded. Low neap tides are the go and you'll need a wsw swell of 2.5m at least for this to break. anchor your boat out the back towards the passage and watch a few sets roll through first. This will ensure your boat is anchored at a safe distance and you also get to see what section you want to surf. Take a well stocked first aid kit because the last thing you want to do is sit in the boat bleeding profusely as you watch the others getting kegged. Locals run this place so if your a fly in blow in watch out for the snake... And if you snake someone here you may aswell get back in your boat whilst you still have one. Before any one cuts sick about this, do you really think the whordes are going to travel to that extent for a wave when there are better waves closer to the major population??? "I was going to go surf tombstones and monuments but decided on a trip to gidley" The only people who surf the place are locals, ex-locals on a fishing holiday and the blow ins on their day off. If your stressing bout crowds, search like we did! there are plenty of waves on offer around here. I'll give you a hint N'W R.......
