Ambiente

The only problem is localism : even if you are alone and respectful, you could have some problem. If you have serious troubles with locals, quit the island.

- I surfed the left 13 years ago for 4 days on my honeymoon. Long paddle, but really fun wave. Great conditions -- head high to a a few feet overhead. Locals at that time were really cool, and I was sure to be respectful. Got a nice scar on my shin still from a chunk the reef took out of me. Beware paddling in after surfing for a few hours, it can be a bitch.

- Been there done that. Beautiful island with 3 really good breaks...all within paddling distance of the beach...if you can handle a long paddle.

When there is a strong swell from the SW...be very careful on an outgoing tide when surfing Fare and Fare lefts...you can get sucked out to sea...literally! Water surges thru the lagoon and pushes water out thru the pass where Fare/Fare Right break.

Additionally...if you are not an experienced, solid surfer...you probably will get hurt on any decent swell. Fare is an fairly easy takeoff...but the inside bowl is extremely dangerous...there's a lot of water pushing thru and it's shallow. Much heavier than race track Ulu. Trust me. We're talking broken ankle kind of stuff. The other 2 main breaks are equally dangerous...this is not an island for beginners. And by the way...I consider anyone with less than 2 years of constant surfing...to be a beginner. Sorry...if you 'learned' how to surf on a 4 week vacation to Kuta, Bali...you don't know how to surf...yet.

Locals are stand off ish...you would be too. No stink eye...in other words...no direct eye contact with local boys when walking thru town.

Don't bring a crowd. In fact...2 surfers are probably a crowd. Solo is good....but if you have to do it...bring a bro. Don't be loud or obnoxious...stay very low profile and try NOT to be noticed. Exotic local women...but be careful you aren't pissing off some local boyfriend.

Enough said?
