Taapuna rocks! - Vairao is actually a cool wave too, but Taapuna is right there in town and has some really nice barrels.

Great wave!!! - I surfed Taapuna on a 6ft day... Great wave and respectful locals as well. A long paddle that is really worthy. In case of shark fobia, do not even get into the lagoon. Go to the Lagoonarium that is nearby...

Taapuna - Been to Tahiti 2X after about 25 years of surfing. I only had the chance to surf Taapuna once while I was waiting for my ride to Teahupoo. Woke up really early because I heard that Taapuna gets really crowded. Paddled out by myself got through channel to see perfect 6 footers with nobody out. I had to pinch myself....but it did not last. Within 20 minutes there were frothing spongers everywhere. Got two set waves alone before getting dropped in on every wave after that. Really disappointing. I was quiet, alone, respectful and am a lifelong surfer. Could not believe it. I read an earlier post that said the Tahitians were sick of Americans but in the 30 days I have spent there on two seperate trips I ran into perhaps 4 Americans! The problem as I see it with this place is that it is overrun with spongers. It is a total joke! Skip it and enjoy the many passes south with fewer people.
