Travelling Surfer - Im an expat living in NZ and am saddened to see some of the rubbish people write on here regarding localism!
I have lived and surfed in some of the best places for surf in the world and have seen and experienced how crowds and localism have ruined the vibe in many places. However this is not true of NZ and I have only met some of the most friendly helpful surf stoked people you could ever want to meet in the water.
It seems the people writing this crap on the net generally arent in the water and have obviously never been out their own backyard, chances are you will probably never meet them as they cant surf anyway!

all time Tap - this is one of the best breaks in the north island, but sadly cant get there any more, due to thoughtless surfers, littering the place. The Ledge is scary shit!No access now except boat.

It's for real - About 10 years ago I had my trimaran down in N.Z. It being my birthday (Jan.25th) and a big cyclone swell, I took the (only)day off from my 6 month long, once in a decade,mother-of-all-refits going on in a boatyard down in Whangarei. Kiwi friends had told me about this place, and it being near the Bay of Islands, I was of course, already familar with the area from my arrival in N.Z.It wasn't easy to find, had to open up a gate that said "Private property" and continue down a dirt road. When I saw heeps of surfers (to sound kiwi, throw alot of "heeps" into your sentences), I knew it was the spot. The reef broke several hundred yards offshore. It kinda reminded me of Ventura Overhead in So Cal. Great wave, only 8-10 guys out. No vibe problems (but then, being alone I didn't bring my own crowd). Of course, there's always a fly in the ointment and this being New Zealand, that was that the offshore winds switched to onshore about 30 minutes after I went out. Still, it was a great adventure of a day.P.S. I'm told that there's some right points if you walk 20-30 minutes to your left.
