Located near the Southern most point in the Mainland, Dinner Plates is a flat reef set up with an impossible ledgy take off and a flat shoulder that backs off into great white infested deep water.

the left is a much more intense ride than the right which just peters off into deep water. the left is crazy as (see pic6)- you have to make sure you get out of the barrel and hit the section because it closes out over a dry ledge down the line. instructions for the left: get pitted, come out and fly above the closeout bowl, make sure you keep your board upon landing and try to land in the foam because you now have to hold on as it washes over the dry ledge and then back into deep water (about a 30m rock platform). dont fall off its a crazy sharp ledge! i have 2 wrecked wetties and plenty of scratches to prove it! me and my 2 mates did a NZ trip but we're from cronulla in australia. i liken the platform to straightening out at shark island - you got a critical rough and tough ride over a shallow and sharp ledge which 70% of the time you'll come off second best. still, the left is worth it, mark my words. we had it pushing six to seven. craziest pits ever. didnt see any sharks but there's a spooky vibe out there. lookin out towards nothing but antarctica... crazy.

slope point - i surfed this place in the early 90's when i lived in the deep dark south. its called slope point on the map. its not for the faint hearted surfer, more for good body boarder, and yes there are great whites in the area! Haldane is further north, the left hander at haldane reef is epic!! the whole region has world class waves for the surfer willing to put up with the cold
