Tonga has great year-round surfing conditions. There are 170 islands of which less than 40 are inhabited. A yacht is the key to opening the incredible surf potential here. A very laid-back holiday destination with friendly locals and pleasant climate. Tonga is a mecca for oceansports enthusiasts.
Eua'iki is a beautiful little island and isn't hard to get to from Tongatapu. It's very fickle for surf. Theres only one spot that breaks with any quality and getting all the right conditions to come together would mean you'd need to spend a lot of time there. Eua'iki has an unjustified reputation for surf based on the fact that the King used to surf the whitewater reforms there back in the 1960's. He was taught to surf by Duke Kahanamoku at Waikiki and Eua'iki is the only spot around Tongatapu which offers whitewater reforms inside the lagoon (over sand /seaweed) that run up to the beach ...... like Waikiki. However its a great little island escape to grab some culture.
Offshore surfspots: they are all within paddling distance from shore. However the offshore spots are a different matter and you need local contacts to find them.

Surfing Tonga - Very fickle surf in Tongatapu. Just had a week in Tonga on a surf trip. Whilst the location was absolutely beautiful, the people were super friendly, the food was amazing, the surf …. was a complete hoax. It never got over waist high and some days were flat. I would highly recommend this place to a family with young kids and the Dad (or Mum) is happy to get a wave if the swell is running but not fussed if it isn't. The main problem with the swell is that the only waves in Tongatapu is at Ha'atafu beach and the coast there faces North West, so if there is a small swell, there is no where to surf. If you live in NZ or on the east coast of Aus and watch the swell and can time your trip, you might score waves but otherwise it is torture in paradise.

Hoax - Just got back from a two week stint in Tonga during the "prime" season for swell. Didn't see a wave over 2 foot. Will be going back to Indo next year, couldn't give a stuff about the crowds!
