Javy - Great beach to surf lots of fun. I have been there when it was going off just before a tropical storm and been there in the spring catching the last cold fronts. Do bring a board to Cancun. Not your favriot board just a 6'0 or fish you will be set and if you dont love the board. Sell it the locals they could use it. There are some good surfers from the Area. One in fact that all the locals know is "Jamican". He is from Cancun grow up on a Bogy and moved into a surf board. He might still ride for Squalo. Look Mexico has great surf. Cancun is cheap there is almost always something to ride (waves, girls, waverunners, girls). Just be safe. wrap it up over there.

local windswells - cancun is probably the only area in the Yucatan that has sand bars/beach breaks (although there are still some occasional rocks lurking under there). The waves are usually small, but relatively consistent, warm and bluuue.
unfortunately, these usual windswells are choppy which isn't good for beginners. You need to be experienced and a good paddler with quick reflexes.
I'd probably only bring a board if I was staying for 2 weeks (unless I had a total beater I was willing to leave there...and the airlines wouldn't charge me.
