It is surfable but not very often - I just surfed it yesterday 10/24/05 and it was waist high with the occasional chest high every 30 min. Like the other guys say it has to be huge everywhere else and high tide. I drove around marina was 14ft closeouts at asilomar there were 4 guys out two with boards and the other two with wave runners they were towing in it was awesome. But the pier was fun it is just a really chilled take your time standing up on a slow left for the chest high ones you can ride it till it dies pump a bit and it reforms for a second ride just as long as the first. One recommendation dont i repeat dont swollow the water or you will have the runniest shit you have ever expirenced when ever there is contamination in the water the pier is the first place that they close the beach. But ya im a local from monterey so i do know what the fuck im talking about and those pictures are not the warf/pier all of these people are talking about Lovers Point which is about 3 miles away from the pier. good luck if the waves are way too big around monterey and the tide is high you might get lucky and get some waves at the pier and dont worry about locals the majority of the people you will see there have just rended soft top boards from On the Beach Surf Shop and the rest are just little rich 15-17 bro's they are harmless.

go surf the lane - i hear ya, probably the only place within 200 miles that'll have teeny tiny waves on a big swell. for my money, i'd head up to the Lane on the huge swells. relatively easy paddle-out and not too crowded when it gets really big, just my two cents. ;)
