English (Traducir este texto en Español): Good in the summer. Can get very powerful even when small (compared to other north county breaks). Lefts and better than rights. Most of the time it just a very short ride but often has powerful barrels that will SPIT. One of the most consistent "spitting" waves in SD. Dont drop in on anyone there are some locals that will get mad. Show respect and have fun.
Ambiente
English (Traducir este texto en Español): Experienced Surfers only here. It is steep and you need a shortboard. Longboarders be prepared to break your logs the wave is powerful and breaks in 4ft deep water most of the time. Steep take offs with spitting barrels (on the best day of the year) and lots of ramps for boostin.
General
English (Traducir este texto en Español): Fun wave some of the time. Surf it early in the morning for least crowd and best conditions or late in afternoon. Dont bother with this spot miday as the wind will usally kill it.

I've been surfing here since I was 5yo - This sandbar pumps out a fairly technical type of wave. There are a half dozen or so peaks that can show promise spanning from the north swim/surf flag above moonlight beach down to Boneyards which is just above the classic Swamis break around the point. the peak directly out front from D st stairs get's crowded quickest because it gets the most hollow. I opt for a peak called Hollywood squares by some locals. It's below the F st look out two streets south of D. At 3-5 occ 6 this A-frame sits over a sand/rock-grass bottom. It's more makeable than standard D. There's also a left hand dredger over a shallow sandbar another 2 or 3 streets down. If that stretch is maxed out. Surf Boneyards, it rarely closes out up to about 10ft. It's a forgiving reef break that can house 3 peaks at a time. Mid going to low with ssw/sw/s/w creates a sic barrel in front of the historic building atop the hill. Long story short, if it's 3-4 occ 5 or 6 you're probably gonna get barreled and def gonna get pinched half the time.

D street - Lots of memories here. Learned to surf at Moonlight, and it's still the first spot I check when I'm back in town. Pearled hard a few times at D street while learning, so yeah it can get heavy. Popular with ball draggers who like to pull into shorebreak closeouts and get sand up the bumhole. Snuck out of gym class one time at San Dieguito with some buddies and we got stoned on the stairs at D street. It was hilarious getting chewed out by the coach later when I was completely tripped out of my mind.
Moonlight is a cool place to hang out; decent parking, food stand, nice sandy beach, girlies in bikinis, showers, bathrooms. The waves close out a lot, but you can score some nice corners too.
At any rate it's good practice because you can get a lot of waves and get used to steeper drops.

surfed it since the 80s - used to be uncrowded. not the case now. every year it gets a little worse. even early morning weekdays its packed, just like every other encinitas spot. pretty closed out most of the time, especially at low tide. but when all factors come together right, it gets pretty good.
