hurricane ??? - I came to Muai with my familly 3 years ago and of course brought my board. I must have been lucky, because When I arrived there was a huge S swell due to a hurricane way off shore of central America, and the first place I found was La P. I was staying at the prince hotel. Its only a few miles south to surf L.P and It was about 12 feet california size, and just perfect shape. I walked on the sharp lava reef then paddled like hell and made it out then over to the top of the take off there was 3 guys out and they didn't say one word to me. There was plenty off waves, I live in Oxnard and have gotten some amazing days around town but this session goes up on my top 3 ever. I am goofy ft and this wave was fast and super rippable. The next day the swell faded a lot but it was still 6 feet and there was about 11 guys out no one again said anything or even gave me a look. Just a bunch of kids. At 6 feet it was actually just as fun, just bottom to top smacks down the whole line then always a cutty at the end. There was fickle swell all week long the only bummer is its like home you have to surf in the morning it blows on shore there by 9 or 10 and is killed in the afternoon. Its super exposed so it will pick up any sort of south in the water. The break wall was only about 2 foot and la P was 6. No one goes to maui with there bro's on a surf trip so when you and your wife need a vaction this is cool you can surf and play in a safe "USA" place, I don't need to go to other countries when I need some warm water I will go to hawaii I have hit all the islands and love it, don't worry I will be stuck in cal. for life. It sucks here I would rather live on the east coast or Texas. California is full of shit.

Sick - This place is sick on a good south swell. Long waits between sets, but worth it. Sketchy reef, bowling waves, apparently sharky but I have had no encounters, and usually empty due to the long walk.

honeymoon - never travel to surf destinations without your board and with your chick!!

unbelievable - stayed at the wailea and didn't bring my board 'cause it was my honeymoon and not cool to surf on your honeymoon especially when your chick is cool and let's you surf all the time. so, i cut her some slack and left the board at home. so, we're in maui and i'm bored with bodysurfing shorebreak at the wailea and at big beach so we drive south, onto the lava, and hike. I ALMOST SHIT MYSELF. la perouse looked double overhead, peeling offshore, nobody out and i wanted to cry. never saw it before, never heard of it before, until running into it by chance. Talked to a couple locals and they said it is straight legit. Looked kinda gnarly. Bummed that I found it on this site as it's now advertised. But I'll be back. It looked so majestic and awesome. Remote and spiritual. I will definitely surf this place and when I do, I will thank the hawaiian Gods and hug all the locals. Because for sure, there aren't too many spots like this one on the planet. And I've been to a few. Nothing like this. Big, bad, and beautiful. Can't wait. Much love to the locals there. From, Blacks Local. PS. I'm not bringing anybody but myself. Just out of respect.

SURFING LA PEROUSE BAY - I VISITED MAUI IN JUNE OF 2005. QUICKLY LEARN THAT MAUI HAS SERIOUS SOUTH SWELL ISLAND SHADOWING. LAHAINA HARBOR, BARELY BREAKING; MAALEA, HOWLING OFFSHORE AND TWO FOOT; THE SAME DAY AT LA PEROUSE WAS SIX FOOT PLUS AND UNCROWDED. I AM A SUPER HAOLE AND LA PEROUSE IS A "LOCAL" SPOT BUT BECAUSE I DROVE DOWN BY MYSELF, ALONE AND THROUGH OUT A COUPLE OF SHAKAS I DIDN'T REALLY HAVE ANY PROBLEMS. THE FIRST DAY I SURFED WAS SIX FOOT+ AND MAYBE THREE GUYS OUT. THE SETTING IS LAVAFLOW EVERYWHERE, WHILE WALKING FROM MY CAR TO THE BAY I SAW THE WAVE AND HOW SOLID IT WAS BUT I COULDN'T REALLY SEE WHERE TO PADDLE OUT FROM. KEPT WALKING AND EVENTUALLY SAW A LITTLE TINY OPENING IN THE BRUSH TO PADDLE OUT OVER THE REEF. FARELY EASY PADDLE WITH AN OPEN CHANNEL WHICH CAN CLOSE WITH A LARGE SET. GOT 6-8 WAVES WITHOUT HASSEL AND FIGURED I WAS BLESSED SO I DECIDED TO CATCH ONE IN. I HAPPENED TO CATCH A PRETTY GOOD SIZE SET AND AS I, SUPER HAOLE WAS RIDING THIS WAVE IN I ACTUALLY GOT A HOOT FROM A LOCAL PADDLING OUT. I WAS STOKED.
CAME BACK THE NEXT DAY AND I GUESS MAUI'S PROFESSIONAL SURFING COMMUNITY ALL HEARD HOW GOOD IT WAS THE DAY BEFORE. IT WAS EVEN A LITTLE BIGGER AND HIGHERTIDE, SO IT WAS BREAKING CLOSE TO THE LAVA SHORELINE. TEAM VOLCOM IS OUT AND CHARGING. I NOTICE THAT A COUPLE OF TIMES I CHOSE TO PADDLE FOR A SET AND THE LOCALS JUST LET ME GO. LATER I REALIZE THEY ARE LETTING ME GO BECAUSE THE WAVES I'M PADDLING FOR ARE CLOSEOUTS AND THE WORST WAVES OF THE SETS. I GET CAUGHT INSIDE, I FEAR THE LAVA CHEESE GRATER AND JUST BARELY ESCAPE WITH A SMALL REEF GASH TO THE KNEE. I CALL IT A DAY AND DRIVE BACK TO LAHAINA. THIS DAY MAALEA IS BREAKING 3-4 FT WITH QUITE A FEW GUYS OUT AND AGAIN HOWLING OFFSHORE WINDS. I WATCH FOR A WHILE. I FIGURE LA PEROUSE TO BE CLOSE TO THE MOST ADVENTUROUS SUMMER SURFING EXPERIENCES POSSIBLE ON MAUI OTHER THAN SIX FOOT+ MAALEA.

Sweet & sour - This place goes completely off...about 5 days each year. The rest of the time it is like a girlfriend that you would never marry. Fun, but never what you really want. Totally inconsistent and often the opposite of what the reports are calling; it's supposed to be flat and "lops" has head-high surf (if you don't mind bouncing on the lava mat)...or it's double overhead at Lahaina Harbor and Lops is dribbling. Weird angle. Extremely long lulls. But then a sick aqua peak starts to wedge out by the rocks and next thing you know there is a southern-hemi freight train of swell coming through. Best use of this spot is to teach you how to ride real reef breaks...commit and ignore the rock/reef right in front of you. Be respectful. Ali'i rest in the lava tubes above the break. Don't go looking for them, it won't end well, I promise. Just be mellow at this place.

Gerry Lopez surfs here - Get Louis Martin (Tropix / Maui Built) to shape you a 7'6" for this spot and charge. It is one of the most beautiful places in the world to surf and keeps the non-experienced out of the water. You will get worked here if you don't know what you're doing. It's well-known and very crowded on a good South swell. Better than Dumps though. No sponges.

La Perouse Bay - This is no secret but its not a windsurfing spot either, nor do I believe it is advertised as one. The trades blow offshore here all day which is not a favorable windsurfing condition. 15 years ago you could get it perfect with a handful of guys out all day. Now the internet and word of mouth has ruined any chance of that. Don't surf here if you are the least bit afraid of razor sharp lava, reef and heavy bowling waves. Oh yeah, and tiger sharks.
