Cape Lookout State Park is a few miles north of Pacific City - you can't miss it. Take the first left down the trail from the parking lot. It is quite a long walk down to the beach. Be prepared (food & water) for the walk back up. After a good day surfing the climb is tough. 1/3 of the way down the trail you can see the break.

Cape Lookout is one of those places you never forget. It is a serious committment to make the trek to the beach. It is a bit of a gamble because you have to hike even to see the waves, and you are so far away that you really can't tell what the conditions are. It is a long pack but if you catch it on a good day you will go again and again. The atmosphere can be spooky. This is a huge, vast beach just south of a huge cape. You are out with a few friends and there isn't a soul within miles. Cell phones do not work and there are no payphones and it is a long way back to the car.

General
A sign in the parking lot say's "locals only". Don't worry about it, chances are you'll be the only one there.

- re. from the old days...sorry to hear about the sand pileup on the reef...what's happening is that the winter storms are producing bigger and bigger waves which are moving sand south to north in ever increasing amounts...that's what changed agate beach of the old days and will probably change a lot of south facing spots which will catch all of that sand head on...look for it in the next few years...you can always hope for some good sand bars to build up but the reef may be history. sorry, the camp was an epic spot when it was on!
