- Localismo
English (Traducir este texto en Español): Wedgy peaks all over the place. Easy to get out, but can be board-crunching once head+. Watch parking in the sand w/o 4-wheel drive. Recent beach re-nourishment has altered this wave.
Ambiente
English (Traducir este texto en Español): The Washout is located in about a 4 block area with rock groins each block. Waves wedge around the rocks and sandbars are numerous. Also, the beach itself slightly curves back towards the NW through the break and the waves are less likely to close out than other locations.
General
English (Traducir este texto en Español): Since this is the only relatively consistent break in SC, it is very crowded when decent and out of control during bigger swells. This includes the beach; its like a big stage. Locals are aggressive and will intimidate (not many fights)...I know, I was one of them. Better surfers than you would think.

Hurricane - This place is going off right now, they have an HD video for it on surfline. Lots of good guys out too. Really making me want to surf, too bad it's flat here on the west coast. :/

good...compared to gulf - I surfed the washout exclusively for 2 years in the early 80s. Gotta say it was a godsend for a dude who had only surfed in the Gulf (Pensacola)...east coast is much more consistent/better shape overall. Trunkable 7 months of the year, but water got down to 45 deg in winter (5/4 suit, booties and gloves) and waves sometimes got heavy/slammy and intimidating (I might ride those now). Air temps were surpisingly mild, though, never getting below 40 deg. Even back then, the locals were already doing aerials (first airs I ever saw). If you live right near the beach, that area would keep the surfer satisfied.

pancakes for breakfast! - it's so freaking flat here ALL THE TIME! I don't understand how the locals can deal. I've only lived here for 3 months now, and I've never seen a worse place to surf. In the entire hurricane season, there were exactly FOUR (by my count) days of head high or bigger. That's enough to drive me over the edge, so much respect to you guys who have dealt with that your whole lives and still have commitment to getting down there when it's good.
On a side note, why the heck does Folly Beach force people to pay to park on the side of the road? It's absolute horse-crap to charge money to use the beach, especially at the Washout, where there is nobody around anyway and no public service seems to be provided other than the garbage cans (which I am pretty sure are maintained by Surfrider folks). Freaking communist liberals over there, for real. Anyhow, 5 more months of flat nastiness, then it's back to the west coast and real waves, crowds, and kooks.
Pray for Surf!!!!
