- lots of fun but lots of crowd. try to avoid weekends if you can. there are a lot of longboarders that cant surf, and that´s a serious risk!

- For me, the best wave in Rio. My favorite spot, with long and powerfull waves. Really fun.

Surfing around Rio - AS I FOUND IT DIFFERCULT TO GET TO THE SURF SPOTS, IVE ORGANISED A SURF TOUR in RIO. NOW I AND YOU CAN NEVER MISS THAT DAY GOING OFF (which i now know happens alot) Its very consistant swell here and so nice to never wear a wetsuit. Im connected with mellow yellow backpackers in Copacobana (A highly recomended place to stay)Party on and surf all day!!! If anyone is interested in info or pictures of Rio surfing beaches write to me over email. Fun travels

longboarders crowd - the spot is ok but it gets realy shity because of the longboarders who think they own the beach not only they are too many but also most of them are bad surfers causing risk to other surfers...

Clarifications to the guy bellow - Ok, We both agree that Macumba rocks on a good day. The definition of world class gives way to a never ending discussion. My point is I dont think Rio offer world class waves, period. It doesnt mean that EVENTUALLY, one or other spot will. Now beacuse you surfed Macumba as good as Sunset or Pavones (it can get classic for either rights or lefts)a couple of times in your life (I did), it doesnt mean they are as good a spot.
Another issue, do you think that a good 6ft plus SE swell is that common? Like what, once every 3/4 weeks or more spaced out like every 2/3 months? If so, do you actually think someone spending a week in Rio is likely to find it working on these "common" perfect conditions? S/SW are more common, SE are harder to find. Even harder on a 15ft swell. That is a little bit of a stretch. I have seen it a couple of times in a lifetime and unless you are a longboarder it gets unsurfable.
Macumba IS consistent, DOES offer way above average surf and IS a long and powerful wave. If youre lucky youre gonna find excelent surfing, if youre not, chances still are you are not going to regret surfing there. Together with Prainha, the best wave in Rio.

macumba rocks - definately world class! if you didn't get it on a good day, it's your problem. just have to wait for a E, SE or S (even SW sometimes) medium swell (doesn't need a big swell, works from 4ft to 15 ft-heavy conditions). and these swells are NOT uncommon.

Good, but "World Class" my ass!!!! - On a good day, Macumba rocks. But it doesnt go off real good that often (needs a big, not frequent E/SE over 5ft swell, and NE winds to get real classic) . When it does, longest wave in Rio, one of the longest in Brazil. Even so, to call it "world class" is a little bit of a stretch...Iwould call it "Regional classic".The average day is just ok, which is pretty good by Rio standards. Worth checking out, specially when Prainha is too crowded, which is, almost ever.
