Ambiente

Note from a local Gringo - OK Gringos,Listen up and you will here the real story of Pampilla. I live on top of the hill overlooking P. The story of the 8 footers is true... and at other times you need your longboard to surf the dink sets. Most of the time it breaks right at about 4-6 feet. Over 8 it closes out and turns into a storm break. You'd better be able to duck dive ten in row at least if you want to surf the good stuff on a big day. It's way out there. The best location advice is to line up with the lighthouse on the hill. Line up with the lighthouse centered in the middle of the apartment building with the blue tinted glass and at least as far out as the end of the jetty to the south. From there you will be at the edge of the channel and in the zone for the right break. You can work it farther out but sometimes it closes out from the right if it breaks far out.On big days the best spot is directly in front of the light house but way out. More or less lined up with the end of the jetty to the south with the resaraunt on it (good food but pricey). Be patient and don't go for the first wave in the set. The second or third are always better.Enter the water far all of these breaks exactly half way between the two jettys. The current in close to the shore runs right to left then changes to go left to right. By entering there, you catch the current as it's changing and is running straight out. If you work your waves right you can do a racetrack pattern on the current and save a lot of effort paddling.Pampilla is best at low tide on small days and high tide on big days. Other wise it's either flat or closing out. Its also best in the mornings when there is only one wave set breaking. By afternoons, when the wind picks up, you will see a second set that sometimes conflicts with the main set.In winter you will be more comfortable in a full 2-3 mm suit. Summers you can wear a shorty or trunk it in Feb- Mar.It is truly a break for everyone, just not everyone on the same day. It will change from one day to the next. But I surf it almost every day because there is always something surfable.

8 feet?! - OK. Pampilla is a good spot in its days, you can have some tubes but I have never seen 8 feet waves! I have surf there for 4 years and I have caught it small, medium and big, but 8 feet is 2.5 meters. Thats a big wave even in beaches like caballeros and señoritas. Pampilla gets maximum 2 meters.
