English (Traducir este texto en Español): This is a beach break and is affected by shifting banks. But when the banks are good, it can be really good. Both lefts and rights, barrels, A-frame waves, it just depends on the banks.

There is also a left hand reef break to the south of the beach. This can hold big swells. It is a fairly hard core wave, and is worth checking out when the swell is over 5 foot on the beach. I've heard it can handle over 10 foot, but I've never seen it this big. It breaks over rocks and can produce a long left hand wall with barreling sections. You have to walk around the rocks and jump off the rocks in betweem the sets.
Ambiente
English (Traducir este texto en Español): In summer the beach is crowded with sunbathers and swimmers. There is a surf life saving club and a shop. Port Waikato has a small local communtity. In winter the beach is pretty much deserted.
General
English (Traducir este texto en Español): This spot on its day can have awesome waves and is worth a look when the easterlies are blow'n.

Not that good -
Very positive comments but this place is fickle. The massive river valley behind the beach means big sea breezes starting at 11 in the summer and 12 in the winter, always blowing it out. But firstly the reef; When it's on it's good, but it needs sand to fill in the gaps on the reef and it hasn't worked most of 2010. Entry is very hairy jumping off
The beach is very fickle, best at high tide which means you can't get down the beach unless you are on a Quad Farm bike. Piha and Maori Bay for example have curves at the end of their bays, containing the sand and forcing water out through channels creating bars and waves. Port Waikato has a curve only at the south end, then it's 4km straight up to the river mouth. So sand is constantly moving, bars never last and it hardly ever holds over 3 ft.
It is fickle and the chances of a surf after 1.15 drive from Auckland is low. That's the reality.

port reef "p land" - this is the nz equivalent of pipe. huge tubes, gaping death pits that you could fit a bus inside, if you come here watch out for the "heavies" stan, antz, zane, barry, wayno, respect.

Sick on it's day - I've surfed the reef here at triple over head, an easy take off to a gnarly barrel inside, very long wall(5 guys in the water). If it's big always walk out to the point to check the reef as sometimes it's impossiblt to see from the beach, also had very fun A-frame son the beach. You'll hardly ever see this place crowded. A solid sw-w swell is ideal.
